The Chamber Website Audit - 10 Things to Check Before Your Next Renewal

Jeni May 12, 2026

Most chamber websites get renewed on autopilot: same platform, same contract, same problems.

Before you sign another 12 or 24 months, run this 10-point audit. It takes about 30 minutes and reveals the gaps most chambers do not know they have. Print it out. Work through it honestly. Then decide.

Point 1: Mobile Experience

Open your website on your personal smartphone and navigate to your events page, your member directory, and your contact form. Can you complete all three tasks without pinching, zooming, or fighting small tap targets? If not, your mobile experience is failing the majority of your visitors.

Point 2: Page Load Speed

Go to PageSpeed Insights, free from Google, and enter your website URL. A score below 70 on mobile means your site is loading slowly enough to hurt your search rankings and lose impatient visitors. Most platform-based chamber sites score in the 30 to 50 range.

Point 3: Directory Accuracy

Pick 10 random member listings in your directory. Call or visit three of them. Are their hours correct? Is their phone number current? Is their description accurate?

A directory that is more than 20% inaccurate is worse than no directory. It trains visitors not to trust it.

Point 4: Event Calendar Currency

Is your most recent posted event within the past 30 days? Is your next posted event happening within the next 60 days? If either answer is no, your calendar is making your organization look inactive to every first-time visitor.

Point 5: Online Renewal Capability

Can a member renew their membership online right now, in under 3 minutes, without calling your office? If not, you have a process that costs staff time and increases lapse risk with every renewal cycle.

Point 6: Search Engine Visibility

Search "[your city] chamber of commerce" in a private browser window. Are you the first organic result?

Search "[your city] business resources" and "[your county] chamber." What do you see?

If you are not appearing prominently for your own community name, your SEO foundation needs attention.

Point 7: ADA/Accessibility Compliance

Run your site through the WAVE accessibility checker at wave.webaim.org. More than a handful of errors means your site may not be compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA standards, which creates legal exposure and excludes a significant portion of your community from accessing your content.

Point 8: Contact Response Protocol

Fill out your own contact form with a test message. What happens? Do you get an immediate confirmation email? Does your staff receive a clear notification? How quickly is the inquiry routed and responded to?

The answer reveals your prospect's experience, and it is often not what leadership assumes.

Point 9: Analytics

Do you have Google Analytics, or another analytics platform, running on your site? Can you answer these questions:

  • How many visitors did your site have last month?
  • What page do most visitors land on first?
  • What percentage of visitors are on mobile?

If you cannot answer these, you are making decisions about your digital presence without data.

Point 10: Renewal Anchor Points

Does your site give members a reason to visit beyond looking up another member's phone number? Are there member resources, exclusive content, event registration tools, or community news that reinforce the value of membership every time someone logs in?

If your site has nothing to offer a member who is already enrolled, it is not supporting your retention strategy.

Score Yourself

8 to 10 passing means your site is in solid shape.

5 to 7 passing means significant gaps worth addressing before your next renewal.

Below 5 means your current platform is working against you.
